- driving the diesel locomotive and operating the train at a set speed depending on the railway track profile, train weight, adhering to the schedule, ensuring transport safety, passenger service culture, cargo and rolling stock preservation
- ensuring optimal train operation modes with minimal diesel fuel consumption
- checking the correct coupling of the locomotive with the first wagon and the connection of air hoses, as well as opening end cocks between them
- checking the operability and correct functioning of the locomotive brake equipment
- ensuring smooth train movement, safety during boarding, disembarking, and passenger transportation
- checking the mechanical condition of the locomotive, axlebox units, and wheelsets when the train stops at intermediate stations
- performing various shunting operations on general and private railway tracks
- uncoupling freight wagons at set speeds from the hump or profiled track, arranging wagons according to loading-unloading fronts at cargo and technical operation points, assembling and disassembling train compositions during shunting operations
- troubleshooting locomotive or wagon issues that occur en route within the scope of the locomotive crew regulations; if not possible, taking necessary measures to clear the railway section occupied by the train ensuring safe movement
- applying emergency braking to stop the train in case of sudden obstacles or emergency stop signals
- requires professional training and a certificate to operate a diesel locomotive
- secondary specialized professional education
